WFC Runners - Sports Awards, Split Thursday Session, parkrun, Race Reports

News

With storm Ciara causing havoc the majority of races were called off, including the London Winter 10km, which means it was actually a quiet weekend for the club.

I would like to thank those who nominated me for an award at the Winchester district Sports Awards. I was amongst some awe inspiring people with some amazing achievements so to come away with second place in the Volunteer of the year award was amazing. I'm truly touched.  Thank you.

Whilst I was at the awards Run Leaders Mike and Rachel were leading another huge group of 36 runners.  This week Mike took a group half the group for a high street pyramid session, whilst Rachel took the other half for some Kenyan hill sprints on Blue Ball Hill.  Yet again they were supported by Simon H and Jenny L.  We welcomed five new members with Jamie, Olivia, Helene, John and Paula joining the group for the first time.  Welcome to Fit Club!

Huge thank you to Mike, Rachel, Jenny and Simon for their support.

Race Reports

The Thorpe and Egham Half by Sarah Geddes

The Thorpe and Egham race was my fourth half marathon. It was a 9am start, which meant a really early start from Winchester. I was driving up the M3 in the dark thinking ‘What am I doing? Is this all part of my mid-life crisis?’ I got messages from Caroline and Jules saying ‘Good Luck, you will love it’ which made me feel much better. I arrived at the scenic Staines shopping centre car park to see lots of other runners making their way to the shuttle bus. There was a very enthusiastic marshal on bus the who chatted to us on the way to Egham cricket club.

At the cricket club we were greeted by a rock choir in full swing at 8am and a bar-b-que, so you could have pre-run burgers if you fancied it. There was a warm up which I thought looked slightly dangerous with extremely high side kicks, so I didn’t risk it and stuck to my regular fit club warm up.

I am pretty sure that my PB is down to Coach James and the fact that I managed to go to every Thursday night session in January, even the very wet one. Thank you again for all your support and encouragement. This was the only official picture I could find. I might have done even better if I had been running in the same direction as everyone else!

It was a big event with thousands of runners but it still had the feel of a smaller race. There were lots of runners from Runnymeade and Bracknell Forest. I met one nice man from Eastleigh RC. Being relatively new to running events, I never really have a race plan but here they had pacers which I hadn’t seen before and they were really helpful. You could decide where to start and try and keep them in your eyeline if you were aiming for a particular time. I decided to try and keep up with the 2:10m flag to try and improve on my 2:18m.

On the course there were lots of enthusiastic marshals banging tambourines and a few musicians dotted around the course including a steel drummer. I started chatting to two runners who were training for London, they were really friendly and made it their mission to get me a PB and also pointed out that I was actually keeping up with the 2-hour pacer, sometimes it pays to have bad eyesight! It wasn’t the prettiest course I have ever run, but it definitely made up for that in atmosphere. I was struggling towards the end and just tried to focus on getting to the next tree, fence, bollard etc. In the last mile the nice man from Eastleigh ran past me and shouted “Come on Winchester!”. It was a lovely moment, and gave me that final burst of energy to get to the finish line.

I was quite distracted by all the goodies at the finish line, people were making their T-shirts into bags and filling up. Lots of healthy snacks and drinks but no cake, sadly. I couldn’t believe it when I looked at my time and realised I had knocked 12 minutes off, I would have been happy with one.

I am pretty sure that my PB is down to Coach James and the fact that I managed to go to every Thursday night session in January, even the very wet one. Thank you again for all your support and encouragement. This was the only official picture I could find. I might have done even better if I had been running in the same direction as everyone else!

Challenge - Week 5

We are now in the second block of the challenge and you have all predicted the number of runs each week and the length of the longest run.  The scoring for the number of runs is the same as block 1 (points = %age of runs completed up to a max of 100).  The points for the long run element of the challenge are based on the %age of distance covered.  The points are therefore as follows per week:

25 points for 100% (or more)
20 points for 80-99.99%
15 points for 60-79.99
10 points for 50-59.99
0 points for less than 50%

Therefore if you predict 10 miles and run 10 miles you get 25 points.  If you run 8.5 miles you would get 20 points and if you ran less than 5 miles you would get nothing!  Best of luck everyone!!

We have 44 members remaining in the challenge with 35 of those on full points.  Illness, weather and race cancellations took their toll last week but there are so many people pushing themselves and getting out there to do their runs and long runs.  It is inspiring!

Here are the points so far!
