WFC Runners - Bournemouth, Clarendon, Basingstoke, Burger King (!), parkrun

News

This weekend was a busy one for racing with members at the Bournemouth Festival of Running, The Clarendon race series and various other races across the world!

First up was the Bournemouth festival of running where we had three members running the half and three running the marathon.  First off was Alice, Graeme and myself running the half marathon.  It was an early start for us as we had to be at Kings Park by 7:15 ready for the 8am start.  After the awful weather in the week the weather looked just about perfect for running, albeit with a brisk westerly breeze.  I was fortunate to record a PB, although missed my target by an annoying 16 seconds.  Alice and Graeme crossed the line together but the chip timing gave Graeme a slight advantage in finishing times.

Starting at 10 the marathon followed directly on from the half.  Running in the marathon we had Karen, running her first ever race over the 26.2 mile distance, and Anna and Mike Hastie. Being a sunny day the temperatures were rising and it was a warm set of runners that we cheered through just after half way.  They battled superbly onwards and recorded some amazing times.  Karen just narrowly missed out on breaking 5 hours, which is amazing given the conditions.  Mike had to work really hard in the final quarter of the race but managed to come in just under the 4 hour mark.  Anna ran superbly well (despite marshals trying to trip her in the first mile) and came home in just under 3:44, a new PB and a good for age qualifying time for the London Marathon.  Well done all three of you!

Here are the results:

Bournemouth Marathon
Anna – 3:43:38 – PB
Mike – 3:59:12
Karen – 5:03:32 – First marathon!

Bournemouth half
James – 1:40:16 – PB
Graeme – 1:54:34
Alice – 1:54:35

A bit closer to home we had the Clarendon Marathon marathon, half and relay.  This route is a point to point race which follows the old pilgrims route from Salisbury to Winchester and is a tough, hilly trail race.  The conditions over the past week would have made it slippery and muddy underfoot.

Going off first we had Glenna, Trish, Fran and their friend Ruth running the Clarendon marathon relay.  This was 4 legs of roughly 6 and a half miles each.  In a superb effort the ladies came home in a shade over 5 hours for the full marathon distance.

Following on from them running from Broughton to Winchester was the half marathon.  representing Fit Club we had Steve and Allen, both of whom ran extremely well over the challenging course!

Here are the results:

Clarendon Marathon Relay
Glenna/Trish/Fran/Ruth – 5:05:23

Clarendon Half
Allen – 1:59:39
Steve – 2:17:56

Continuing the half marathon theme we had Anna Horgan running at the Basingstoke Half.  This scenic race on traffic free roads is a popular race in the Hampshire race calendar with over 1,000 runners entering.  Anna ran a great race and came home in a cracking 1:57:02.  Well done Anna!

And last but not least we had Anne Arnold running the Burger King 10km on Miami beach.  It was a hot humid run but was made all the better by the free burgers, sunglasses and Hershey's pie/cake at the end!
