WFC Runners - London Marathon, Fit Club babies, parkrun, Thursday sessions, running podcasts

News

Before we get into the main running news I would like to congratulate Steve and Hannah on the birth of their daughter!  Mother and baby are doing well.  Welcome to the Fit Club family baby Lucas!!

After a couple of weeks with very little racing, the main event finally arrived this weekend.  It was the Virgin Money London Marathon.  We had Alf, Anne and Rachel all running and representing Fit Club in the capital and what a day of contrasting emotions they had.

Alf was able to get a relatively quick start, only waiting 23 minutes to cross the line, but Rachel and Anne had to wait for nearly an hour!  Eventual winner Eluid Kipchoge was already at tower bridge by the time Rachel crossed the start line!!

Al three started well, but unfortunately Alf picked up an early hip injury and despite physio treatment couldn't rectify it. This made for a very painful final 18 miles.  Being the amazing man he is though he cracked on and got round to collect his medal.  What an inspiration!

In one of the more touching moments of the day Rachel caught up with training partner Anne and even grabbed a quick selfie!  Both of the ladies performed extremely well in their first marathons finishing in fantastic times.

It was also amazing to see Philippa G, Philippa D and Sharon all travelling up to the city to support their club mates. What a team.

It is days like this that make me proud to be a coach.  Seeing the pride and determination everyone showed to complete the race and realise their dreams was truly emotional.  Also seeing how, as a club, we tracked everyone, supported them, wanted them to be the best they could.  It was great.  It felt like the club ran every step with them.   Thank you all for being awesome.

The final times were as follows:

Rachel - 4:32:52
Anne - 4:50:14
Alf - 4:52:58

Well done to all three marathon superheroes!

All of their pages are still open for donations should you wish to donate towards their chosen charities!

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Tina a very speedy recovery.  Tina was taken ill on the Saturday before the marathon and was unable to run it. All the very best Tina, we are here for you every step of the way.

The marathon fun does not stop there!  Next up we have Anna H and Charlotte W running the Southampton Marathon.  Best of luck ladies!!
With Coach James having been away for a couple of weeks here is an update from parkrun and the training sessions from the last couple of weeks!

Thursday 18th April Training Session - North Walls Shuttle Runs

With Coach James on holiday for a couple of weeks the dream team of Anne, Sharon and Rachel took the reigns.  They were joined by 14 runners for a shuttle run session at North walls.  Catherine M joined us for the first time.

The session was a basic shuttle run sprint session.   There were three markers set up at about 10m, 20m, 30m and then a last one at roughly 100m-150m

The aim was to sprint to the 1st marker, touch the ground and sprint back to the start. Then sprint to the 2nd marker, touch the ground and sprint back to the start. Then sprint to the 3rd marker, touch the ground and sprint back to the start. Then it’s a full out hard effort to the final marker. The group then had jog recovery back to the start.

This was repeated 8 times before the group headed back to Abbey Gardens for the cool down.

Huge thank you to Anne, Rachel and Sharon for covering for me and for putting on such a fantastic session.

Next week we will be meeting at Abbey Gardens at 7pm.

Thursday 25th April Training Session - Social run

With coach James still away and the marathon just days away it was agreed to just host a social run, instead of a full session. The session was led by the superb team of One R and Humber (Sharon and Alex).

15 runners joined Sharon and Alex, including new members Matthew and Isobel!

After a warm-up in Abbey Gardens the team headed out along the river, past the Winchester College playing fields, down to Garnier Road car park, along the river ot the back of St Catherine's.

Here the team turned evil and decided to take the group up the St Catherine's steps (all 331 of them), round the top of the hill and back down.  They then headed back along the cycle path, into the city and back to Abbey Gardens for the cool down.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Alex and One R for organising and leading the session!  It's great we have so many budding coaches willing to help me out!

Next week's session will start at 7pm and we will be meeting outside River Park leisure centre.

5 New Listening Recommendations for your next run - by Mike Hastie

Whilst running with others is – for most people – one of the best ways to enjoy running, for those shuffling the streets of Winchester regularly there are times where solo runs are unavoidable. And for every runner that enjoys the headspace and ‘thinking time’ offered up by silent runs, there is usually another glaring at their watch in 0.1 mile increments and in need of some audio distraction.

I definitely fall into this second category, and have found that a good podcast can make the miles fly by a lot quicker. As a number of you reading this will be building up the training distance for longer races and even marathons this year, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the best way to get through those longer solo runs in particular.

About a year ago I wrote a similar blog post, which had a similar ‘Top 10’ list, as well as some general podcast tips & equipment advice. If you’ve joined WFC in the last year, or if you missed this, I’d suggest reading this one first (about halfway down this link, just below someone wanging on about triathlons):

http://wfcrunners.blogspot.com/2018/04/wfc-runners-try-ing-hard-and-running.html

As a bit of a podcast addict, a lot of these are still listened to regularly (especially Desert Island Discs), and if you haven’t already caught Serial then stop reading this, start downloading it and come back when you’ve finished! However, listed below are five of the best new ones I’ve discovered over the last year. Please let me know your thoughts.

The Adam Buxton Podcast– actor/comedian Adam Buxton is one of my favourite interviewers currently; has a very engaging, natural interview style and has now built up a large back catalogue of episodes which is great news if you do enjoy it! If you’re looking for an episode to dip into, the interview with Romesh Ranganathan (complete with impromptu rap battle) is hilarious.

Off Menu– probably best described as “Desert Island Discs with food”. Hosted by comedians James Acaster and Ed Gamble, each week a guest orders their dream meal piece by piece – starter, main course, side, dessert and drink. Was initially drawn to this more by the hosts than the format (have tickets to see both James Acaster and Ed Gamble live this year), and whilst the chemistry between them is excellent, the way food is used to draw out experiences of each guest is very well executed too.

Runners World– bit of a busman’s holiday this one, but I was surprisingly impressed by this monthly offering from RW. Any runners training for a marathon (or considering one in the future) should definitely listen to the Jan2019 episode. The latest one (Feb 2019) also contains a really interesting interview with Jasmin Paris, the vet, mum and all-round superwoman who beat every other man and women to win this year’s Spine Race ultra marathon

The Flight of the Conchords– Another excellent mix of music and comedy, based on the hapless pair that make up - in their own words - “New Zealand’s fourth-most-popular folk duo”. As well as two hilarious albums (available on Spotify and very enjoyable to run to!), a radio show of the Flight of the Conchords struggling to break it in Britain has recently been re-released. Note –this podcast is currently only available on the BBC Sounds app (free to download).

Tailenders –what happens when a Radio 1 presenter, lead singer of the Maccabees and England’s greatest ever fast bowler combine to provide an alternative (and often musical) perspective on cricket. The audience of this podcast is probably split down the middle between cricket ‘fans’ and non-cricket fans, so as someone who has often struggled in the past to convince friends to share my love of the game I was very pleased to find this podcast!

Hope you enjoy some of these suggestions, and let me know if there is anything you’re currently listening to. Remember - if you find yourself involuntarily laughing out loud halfway along the viaduct and getting odd looks from strangers, then you’re doing it right!

WFC Runners - Salisbury 10, parkrun PBs, St Giles Hill, The General, Whinlatter

News
This week the only Fit Clubber we had racing was Lynn at the Salisbury 10. Lynn ran an excellent 1:18:59 and described the race as follows:

"This is my second year in a row and I definitely recommend it. It is undulating but the downhill stretches more than make up for the uphill parts (two notable hills at 10k and 12k). The route is through the countryside rather than into the city itself. It’s not too far away from here so home by lunchtime and there was plenty of parking. Quite a few people doing it seemed to be running London in a couple of weeks."

This week we had 24 Fit Clubbers running at 5 different parkrun venues.  There were 19 at Winchester, Sarah and Jenny at Eastleigh, Elise at Lee-On-The-Solent, Charles at The Eden Project and Trish at Penrose.

There were more superb runs and yet again more PBs

Stefan - (19:54) - Winchester
Colin - (20:28) - Winchester
Lucy G - (24:35) - Winchester
Simon M - (25:47) - Winchester
Karen P - (26:47) - Winchester

And we also had the following course PBs:

Allen - (19:22) - Winchester (equal all time PB)
Jenny - (25:19) - Eastleigh
Sarah - (25:21) - Eastleigh
Shelley - (25:38) - Winchester
Elise - (26:36) - Lee-On-The-Solent
Trish (28:06) - Penrose

Also special mention to Jo, who recorded her highest ever % age grading at Winchester with 63.68%. Also to Charles who recorded a 17:55 and 9th place at the Eden Project despite going the wrong way and having to double back!

Thursday 11th April Training Session - St Giles Hill

This week 20 eager runners met at Abbey Gardens for the Thursday run session.  The weather was beautiful (perfect for running) and the session was to be in the park on St Giles Hill.

After the normal warm up we headed up the steps to the park.  This was the first little effort with the runners taking on the steps to the top.

Once there we headed over to the bottom corner of the field.  Here a path goes up the hill, diagonally across the park.  Half way up the hill there is a lamppost and this is where the first set of reps went to.  The aim was to run hard up the hill to the lamppost, turn and run hard back down to the start.  Here we had a short break.  We did this 5 times.

Following this we did two reps up the full length of the path all the way to the top of the hill and back down with a short break in between.

After this we did a jogged lap of the whole park as a short recovery section, before regrouping back in the bottom corner.   We then repeated the first half of the session (5 short, 2 long hill sprints).

We then headed to the view point for the normal group photos before jogging back to Abbey Gardens for a cool down.

Following the session we headed to Number 5 Bridge Street for a cake sale in aid of Rachel's London Marathon charity. Here we did the presentations to Rachel and Shelley for their 1st and 3rd places in the challenge.  There were loads of cakes and we even had a visit from Mike and Laura, who came to show their support for our amazing marathon runners.

Next week we will be meeting at Abbey Gardens at 7pm.

Race Reports

The General 10km by Elise Gilbert

The week before the General I achieved a PB at parkrun so was a little bit gutted when I saw that on the day of the General parkrun was a paced event, oh well that’s the way the COOKIE CRUMBLES. On the morning of the General I woke up early looked out the window and it looked like LEMON DRIZZLE, on closer inspection it was just very hazy. My friend from work was also running and picked me up at 08.45, the race didn’t start till 10.00 but I always like to get there early as love the atmosphere.

When we arrived we got out the car to register and collect our numbers, it was such a cold wind so we collected our numbers and sat in the car. At 09.45 we braved getting out the car as the queue for the toilets was getting longer and I always need a nervous wee!! It was so cold stood in the queue, we made our way to the start line and once huddled in the crowd it felt a bit warmer I just wanted to get running to keep warm. They came over with a loud speaker but we couldn't hear a word, next thing I knew we were off.

To start with there was about 20m of downhill only to be followed by a big hill I can only describe as ROCKY ROAD, once I was at the top of this hill I was no longer cold and my face felt like I had two JAM TARTS on my cheeks. We then ran down a track and through some woods underfoot I can only describe it as feeling like VICTORIA SPONGE as we had had some rain in the days leading up to the General. I was happily running along quite comfortable until I turned the corner and saw a another big hill in front of me, I slowly plodded up and then we went through some woods only to come downhill the other side, it felt quite steep running down and I thought I would lose control like a JAM ROLY POLY.

I spotted a water station ahead so knew we must be at the halfway point, I carried on and guess what...another hill was ahead of me. I don’t mind hills but by the time I got to the top of this one all I wanted to do was give up and fall in a heap and cry. I found from somewhere the determination to carry on, we entered into more woodland and it was a winding path, I looked at my Garmin and it said 5 miles so I knew it was just over a mile to go.

We seemed to be running round and round the woods for ages and I kept seeing the same people and I remember thinking to myself that I was sure we had gone wrong somewhere, up ahead we finally saw a Marshall who was on his mobile and didn't know which way we had to go, a group of us decided to go round the woods to try and get back on track.

I kept checking my Garmin but at this point it said over 10k. Yet again there was a very steep short hill in front of us I dug deep and managed it as I knew this had to be the last hill!! How wrong I was, they threw in one more for good luck. I have never been so glad to cross a finish line. Once I had finished I waited for my friend and everyone was moaning about the lack of signs towards the end. I ended up finishing on 1hr 6 mins 40 seconds which technically is a PB as it’s my first (& my last) ever trail run.

Whinlatter parkrun by Glenna Greenslade

Whinlatter parkrun is described as a hilly run through Whinlatter Forest Park taking in the beautiful views of Derwentwater and the surrounding mountain ranges. The run comprises one lap, with a loop, using forest trail surfaces. As I had run Keswick and Fell Foot parkruns on previous visits to the Lake District this one had to be done.

We arrived in plenty of time as Dave was tailwalking and we met the very friendly Run Director and her team of volunteers.  We were amazed to see Emma and Richard Carter, fellow Winchester parkrunners and members of WADAC who had arrived in the Lakes the day before

The route started on a narrow section with about 500m of slight downhill so, full of confidence that maybe it wasn’t that bad, it then opened out onto a wider track where the uphills begin and after about 1k I started to wind down to a power walk. The route continued uphill for approximately 1k before it started heading for a short downhill section to the start of the loop.  A sharp downhill narrow path led onto a short flat section before we climbed again and re-joined the path. Another 500m or so uphill before a short downhill sprint to the finish, at a somewhat higher elevation than the start!

Whinlatter Forest is a challenging event and the most elevated parkrun in the UK and officially the second toughest parkrun in the UK.  The relatively new Woolacombe Dunes parkrun is thought to be tougher than Whinlatter.

As there were just 72 runners, walkers and joggers, this meant my finish position was higher than it has been for years!!

When I am next visiting the Lake District I will try Whinlatter again and try and improve on my time by walking less. We had just spent a week doing some strenuous walking before undertaking this parkrun, on our next visit we will have to try and arrive on a Friday with fresh legs for Saturday!

WFC Runners - The General, Wimbledon Common Half, parkrun PBs aplenty and viaduct sprints

News

The main race this weekend was "The General".  This event is a 10km trail race run over two days.  The Saturday is the a straight forward trail 10km race and the Sunday is a 10km obstacle course race.  Elsie was running on the Saturday (see next week's blog for a write-up) and Sarah H was running on the Sunday.
In addition we also had Sarah L running the Wimbledon Common Half Marathon.

This week we had 18 Fit Clubbers running at 4 different parkrun venues. There were 14 at Winchester, Catherine and Allen at Torbay Velopark, Glenna at Whinlatter Forest and Alice at Salisbury.

There were so many highlights this week but the biggest news was the in-form Charles taking the number 1 token at Winchester with a cracking run of 18:09. It was superb front running from the start and fantastic to watch him streak off into the distance!

Here are the PBs:

Allen – (19:22) – Torbay
Jenny – (23:33) – Winchester
Rachel – (24:54) – Winchester

And we also had the following course PBs:

Alice – (24:14) – Salisbury
James – (21:04) – Winchester
Kathy – (29:01) – Winchester

Thursday 4th April Training Session - St Catherine's and Viaduct

This week was the first of the summer sessions and so we headed to Garnier Road for a mix of hills and sprints. Despite the cold and wet weather during the day there was an excellent turn out of 18 runners.

After the arm up we jogged down to the steps at the back of St Catherines.  Here we did a single rep up and down the steps.  There are 331 steps to take on and it was no surprise when Charles was the first to reach the top!

After heading back down and re-grouping we headed down to the viaduct.  Here we did three reps of three different length intervals.  The first was to about a third of the way along the viaduct with the second being the rest of the way along. We then ran the full length of the viaduct to get back to the start.  This was repeated three times through.

After this was done we headed back along to Garnier Road car park where we cooled down before heading off.

Race Reports

Dorney Lakes 20 by Rachel Mills

As I am generally quite lazy, I thought I would take the easy option of running a planned 20 mile race for my longest run. I settled on Dorney Lake Marathon Prep, which being 4 weeks before London was perfect timing. I roped Anne in to join me, and then Anna and Charlotte also decided to run in prep for their respective marathons. I was aware it was going to be a case of running laps which I wasn’t overly thrilled about but it saved me planning a route!

The race took place on 31stMarch, which at the time of booking I had not realised was Mother’s Day, nor had I realised it was the weekend Simon was away on a stag do, nor had I realised the clocks changed!! AHHH!

So, once I had planned the logistics of childcare I didn’t have much time to think about it as I had masses of university work to concentrate on. I knew I could run 20 miles having run at Lydd a few weeks prior.

I slept terribly the night before, clocking up less than 5 hours due to worrying about oversleeping with the clocks changing. But I got up and ate my usual race day breakfast of Weetabix and a cup of tea, preparing snacks to take with me. Five minutes before leaving the children woke up and presented me with some lovely gifts before I set off with Anne.

We arrived much earlier than we had anticipated and met up with Anna and Charlotte. We all collected our race numbers, before I ate my later breakfast! I then joined a huge toilet queue and the bag drop queue as a warm up was taking place. I found the pacer I planned on following and then that is when it all started to go wrong!

My first mile was sloooow at 11.11 pace! I was worrying that it did not fit with my calculations of pace. I then decided that I was going to power on without the pacer, and it wasn’t long before I overtook the next pacer who should have been behind the one I started with. I decided to try and settle into a rhythm and do my own thing. The first three laps (I needed to do five 4 mile laps) were incredibly dull. I found that I was generally running alone which is tough when there is not anything of interest to look at. There was virtually no support either, so when I fell in step with two other runners, Chris and Lisa at mile 10 I stayed with them. At mile 11 I decided I needed a toilet stop and so planned to stop at mile 12. As I didn’t want to run alone I whizzed off so timing it perfectly to run with my new buddies when I can out of the loo!

At mile 16 I was suddenly overcome with emotion and cried, not really knowing why. I gave myself a good talking to and convinced myself not to stop. Again, this happened at mile 18 and I stopped to walk. It wasn’t long before I had someone telling me that I could do it and to keep going, so I picked up the pace again for the last 2 miles. It was around this point I noticed that that a couple of people were wearing the technical t-shirt that I had also pre-ordered. I thought I was delirious when I looked at it, as it seemed to say ‘Maraton Prep’ rather than marathon. It turns out I wasn’t, and they had printed them incorrectly!

Anyway, I have never been so pleased to see a finish line and then never cried so much! Thank you to Anna, Anne and Charlotte who all looked after me! It was my least enjoyable race to date despite the fact It was a PB of over 25 minutes, with an official time of 3:14:39. Not a race I would choose to do in a hurry, but then as I am NEVER running another marathon after London, I don’t need to worry about it!

On a positive note, it has made me realise that if I can run 20 boring miles with no support, London will be a much jollier experience. I’ll let you know in 3 weeks!!

New Year Running Challenge - Final Results!

With the challenge now complete it is time to announce the results! But before we do I will bore you with some stats.

25 runners completed the 12 week challenge. Of the 25 runners, 13 completed all of their scheduled runs and all of their long runs! 15 runners played their wildcards, meaning 10 got through the whole challenge without using one.

We completed 1485 runs in the 12 weeks, averaging 4.9 runs per person per week! One runner, Shelley, ran every one of the 84 days of the challenge! In fact, she’s run every day since the start of December!

12 runners were faster than their predicted times with Sarah H showing the largest percentage improvement when she ran 48:50 at the Eastleigh 10km, having predicted 52:59.  Trish was a close second having run 26:47 at parkrun against a predicted time of 28:45. Both were amazing times!

So the final results…In the end it was all very close, and came down to the final weekend before the table was finalised. As expected the top three were all runners who had maintained 100% for the whole of the challenge and so the differences came down to the target times. With so many good performances the results came down to a matter of seconds.

I am therefore really pleased to announce that the winner, with a total score of 1499.91 out of 1500, is Rachel! Rachel’s target time was 1:55:00 for the Reading half marathon and she came in just 6 seconds shy of that at 1:55:06. Congratulations Rachel! Rachel takes home the first prize of a £40 shoe voucher for Alton Sports, a £25 voucher for Alexandra Sports and a one hour sports massage with Jemma.

Close behind in second place, with a score of 1499.20 out of 1500, is Glenna. Glenna’s target time for the Eastleigh 10km was 58:30 and she came in 28 seconds short on 58:58.  Congratulations Glenna, you win a £40 shoe voucher for Alton Sports and a box of Montezuma Chocolates.

Third place was very closely contested with third and fourth separated by just 0.06 points. However third was taken by Shelley. Shelley’s target time was 26:10 for 5km. Shelley achieved this at the March Monday night track session (expertly paced by Ben), even though she actually ran 25:54, this was enough to take 3rd place. Congratulations Shelley, you also win a £40 shoe voucher for Alton Sports and a box of Montezuma Chocolates.

A special mention to Allen who was joint top going into the final parkrun of the challenge but he put in an amazing effort to improve his 5km time from 20:00 to 19:46. Unfortunately this was just enough of an improvement to take him out of the top 3. In recognition of this Allen also wins a box of Montezuma Chocolates. I’m sure Allen will share these with Catherine who twice fell whilst out doing runs for the challenge.

I would like to thank Alton Sports and Alexandra Sports for their very generous prizes. In addition I would like to thank Rachel Mills for donating the Montezuma chocolates.

Thank you to everyone who participated and for making it such a fun and competitive 12 weeks. I have loved seeing people’s results come in and seeing you all supporting each other.

I only plan on running the 12 week challenge once a year, so look out for the next one next year! However there will be more challenges coming in May and June...watch this space.
