WFC Runners - Winchester 10km, Wokingham Half, parkrun PBs galore, Severn Bridge

News

This weekend saw the Winchester 10km hit the streets of our fabulous city!  We had an amazing group representing Winchester Fit Club with 24 runners competing.  The near perfect running conditions made it a great opportunity for Fit Clubbers to bag PBs, and they didn’t disappoint with at least 14 of our runners recording either all time or course PBs.

Rumour has it that the team were spurred on by the promise of cake from Alex awaiting them at the end of the run.  There are a number of write-ups coming from various members, so look out for more details next week. Here are the full results:

Charles M – 39.04 *
Allen W – 40.25 *

Elsewhere we also had Anne running the Wokingham half.  This was as part of Anne's marathon training and Anne recorded a superb 2:13:41 for the 13.1 mile course. An excellent sign for the next couple of months training ahead of her!

This week saw 16 Fit Club runners at 5 different locations.  There were 12 Fit Clubbers at Winchester as well as Jake at Barnstaple, Trish at Cleethorpes, Jo at Hove Promenade and Coach James at Severn Bridge (see .

There were PBs aplenty as well with the following times being recorded:

Karolina - 30:25
Alice - 25:27
Jenny - 24:10
Sarah - 24:10
Carrie - 23:21
Anna - 23:09
James - 20:58

Congratulations to everyone who ran!

Next week is Winchester's 300th run and to celebrate we are having a post parkrun Fit Club breakfast at the King Alfred pub!  It would be great if you could join us.

Thursday 21st Feb - Social Run

With Coach James away on a well deserved holiday and the Winchester 10km on the horizon it was agreed to organise a social run for the gang!  Anne, Sharon and Rachel took the helm as 15 runners met in Abbey Gardens.  Following the standard warm-up the ladies took the runners on a tour of Winchester.  They threw in a rep of Blue Ball Hill (just so everyone was made to work that little bit harder) before heading back to Abbey Gardens for a cool down and photos.

Huge thank you to the wonderful trio for stepping in and covering the session.

Next week sees us head back to the South Winchester park and ride for some more sprint training and fun and games!

Race Reports

Severn Bridge parkrun - by Coach James

This week I have been on holiday in the Forest of Dean, so I took the opportunity to visit the unique Severn Bridge parkrun.  This was to be my 100th different UK parkrun (102nd overall) and my first in Wales!

I made the half hour journey down and arrived at 8:30.  I met up with my brother and we went for a warm-up up to the bridge, unfortunately it was shrouded in mist with the pylons barely visible.  With the sun already poking through and the wind just a light breeze it was perfect conditions for running!

After the run brief we headed to the start where we were asked to keep right and were warned about the cyclists on the bridge (apparently the cycle way on the other side of the bridge was closed). With very little fuss there was a simple countdown and we were off!
I have been working hard in training for the past 6 weeks with the aim of breaking my PB of 21:01 which had stood since July 2015.  I had had some encouraging training sessions and felt that this may be my chance to finally go under the elusive (for me) 21 minute mark.  This meant targeting 4:10/km or 6:43/mile.  This was the pace that Allen, Mike and I targeted in our track session a couple of weeks back, so I knew that I could maintain it for at least a km.  I therefore set off at this pace.

Now the issue with having the bridge shrouded in mist at the start was that it meant I had no idea how much the bridge rose upwards for the first mile and a half!!  I therefore was working really hard to try and maintain the pace I needed.  Consequently I found myself just about able to stick to my plan for the first mile, but way off pace on the second mile.  It all came down to the final mile, where I knew that I needed to hit 6:30 but I knew that it was all downhill.

I was starting to hurt (as the wonderful pictures will attest) and was in a world of pain by the time I dropped down off of the bridge to the path leading to the underpass.  A quick check of my watch and I saw that I only had seconds to spare.  It was going to be close!

The real sting in the tail is the very short uphill finish and one last effort saw me cross the line in 20:58, collect my token and promptly have to immediately lie down, before I feel down.  I had done it, I had finally broken 21 minutes and I had a shiny new PB to take home from my holiday.

However there was more!!  In the touring community there is a challenge called parkrun bingo.  Collecting finishing times with each second from 00-59.  On average it takes 281 parkruns for runners to achieve this.  For some time now I had just one to get, you guessed it, 58.  So not only did I get PB but I completed bingo!!

It would be remiss of me not to mention the fantastic core team and volunteers who put on such a fabulous morning's running.  They were really helpful, really supportive and, without fail, lovely people.

This meant a great deal to me.  Last time I set my PB I had been in the best shape of my life.  I had spent 2015 focussing on training and really pushing myself to achieve the best times I possibly could.  In the run up to breaking my PB back then I had also broken my 10km, half and marathon PBs and was hitting my best form.

After setting my PB I thought I was invincible but it was shortly after that my injury issues started up.  Beginning with a torn calf I was injured for most of the second half of 2015, with various injuries.  2016 wasn't much better and with Elsie coming along, the loss of my Dad  and then subsequently Bertie being born, I started to think I would never rediscover that form.  Starting the running club has inspired me to focus more and work harder.  Seeing the times and PBs that all of you are recording on a regular basis has driven me to get close to the level of fitness I used to have.  I can't wait to see what the next few months and years will bring!

New Year Running Challenge

Week 7 saw the majority of runners hit both their number of runs and their long run targets.  We are now down to 29 runners in the competition of which 11 have used their wildcards.

As we move into week 8 you should start considering what your targets should be for weeks 9-12.  You should also start considering what your race target is going to be!

WFC Runners - parkrun, challenge update, Cathedral and High Street Sprints

News

For the second week running there were no races and therefore the only update we have is for parkrun!

This week saw 17 Fit Clubbers at Winchester, where we were once again the second best represented club after WADAC.  We also had Lynn, Ben and Shelly all volunteering!

Yet again Lucy G set another PB, taking over 20s off of the PB she set the previous week.  Alf's son Alfie also set a new PB with a fantastic 23:02.   Mike H set a season's best time with a cracking 20:43.

Consolidated report here:

Monday 11th Feb - Track Session

Monday saw the first track session of the year for the runners.  In what I am hoping will become a monthly event, there were 7 of us who headed to the track for some focussed speed training.

The track is an excellent way to dial in your speed training and really work on the paces that you want to hit.  With the track being perfectly smooth and flat and it being a measured distance it is a training location.

I must admit the organisation of the session was fairly selfish, with me wanting to do some very specific 5km training.  Fortunately Mike H and Allen were also willing to join me for the same session.  The rest of the group were made up of Mikaela, Alice, Elsie and One R.

The session I was keen to run was a 1 mile warm-up followed by 5 by 1km with 600m recovery.  I was targeting 4:10 a km or 20:50 5km pace. Thanks mainly to Allen's superb pacing we averaged this pace across the reps, even dropping in a 4:03 km as the very last rep.

The rest of the group were set a one mile warm-up followed by 400m hard with 400m easy recovery.  We then all regrouped at the end to do a final couple of laps.

It was a great session and one I can't wait to repeat in the next few weeks!

Thursday 14th Feb - Cathedral and High Street Sprints

This week saw the runners meeting once again at Abbey Gardens.  It was Valentine's day so numbers were down on recent weeks, but we still had 17, including Lynne who joined us from the Other Fit Club sessions and Jenny and Sarah's friend James, who joined us for the first time! Welcome to the group!

We started off with our usual warm-up before heading off for a jog along the river, up College Street and through the Kingsgate into the Cathedral Square.

Here we started with 4 laps of the square, separated with just a short recovery break.  The aim was to run the laps as hard and as consistently as possible.

From here we headed past the front of the cathedral and over to the High Street.  Here we based ourself at Pret.  from here we did a hard effort up the High Street to the Butter Cross and then jog recovered back to the start, before another hard effort up to the top of the High Street with jog recovery back to the start.  This was repeated 3 times.

We then headed back to the cathedral for 2 more laps of the cathedral square.

We then jogged back to Abbey Gardens for our cool down and stretch.

Thank you to everyone who came along and congratulations to the new members!

New Year Running Challenge

Apologies for the lack of an update for week 5!  Here is the week 6 update...

We have 31 runners left in the New Year running challenge.  Of this 19 have maintained perfect records.  12 have used their wildcards so far.

The scoring for this second block is as follows:

1 point per %age of runs completed giving a maximum of 100 points per week.
25points for hitting or exceeding your long run distance for the week.  20 points for being within 80% of your long run distance, 15 points for 60% 10 points for 50% and 0 points for less than 50%.  e.g. you predict 10km and you run 6.5 you will get 15 points.

As at week 6 the maximum points you can have is 650.

Good luck for week 7, and keep up the hard work!

WFC Runners - News, Winter 10km, lamppost sprints

News

It was another cracking turnout at parkrun on Saturday with 20 members running or volunteering! We had 18 runners at Winchester as well as Anna H handing out tokens. We also had Alf running at Whiteley parkrun. Lucy G was the only PB of the day, very impressive given the conditions at Winchester. Well done everyone!!

Consolidated report here:

Thursday 7th Feb - Lamppost Sprints

Following last week’s cancellation due to poor weather there was a good turnout at Dean Lane park for this week’s Thursday session.   20 runners joined coach James in the park, including new member Karolina.

The session was another sprint session.  This week we were focussing on holding a fast pace for increasingly longer sprints, separated by jog recoveries and short breaks. We warmed up by jogging through Weeke and up Fromond Road, before running down an alleyway to Burnett Road.  Burnett road has a set of evenly spaced lampposts (roughly 30m apart) along the length of the roa

d.  It was these that we used to measure the sprint intervals.  The longest distance between the start lamppost and the end was ~250m.

The session was structured as follows:

Sprint to lamppost 2, jog back to start
Sprint to lamppost 3, jog back to start
Short recovery
Sprint to lamppost 4, jog back to start
Sprint to lamppost 5, jog back to start
Short recovery
Sprint to lamppost 6, jog back to start
Sprint to lamppost 7, jog back to start
Short recovery
Sprint to lamppost 8, jog back to start
Longer recovery

This was just over 2km with half of this being at a fast pace.  This was repeated twice through.

Afterwards we jogged back the way we came and cooled down in the park, before heading off.

Next week’s session will be starting at Abbey Gardens at 7pm.

Week 5 update to follow!  (sorry timed out this week)

Race Write-ups

Cancer Research UK 10k London Winter Run – by Jenny Leishman

I woke up to a strange sound on Sunday 3rd February.  It was a sound that I hadn’t heard for the last three years; my alarm.  I actually got up before the kids. We had to be at Winchester railway station in time to catch the 7:23am train to London Waterloo.  There was still snow on the ground, which set the mood perfectly for the Winter Run. However, it did make for a rather cold and slippery walk to the station.

When we arrived in London, we had to make the 15 minute walk from Waterloo to Trafalgar Square to join the other 23,000 runners.  We dropped off our blue plastic drawstring bags that had been provided for us before the race without having to queue and headed to the centre of the square for a few photos and a warm-up. Before we knew it we were heading towards the start line.

In the race pack, we had been advised to wear an old top to keep warm heading towards the start line.  Just before the start line there was a jumper drop where you could leave your top to be donated to Cancer Research shops.  This was definitely a good idea given the sub-zero temperatures!

Everyone was buzzing as we approached the start line.  As we removed our nice warm hoodies and left them at the jumper drop, the excitement was really starting to set in.  Before we knew it we were off and running past the National Gallery and towards The Strand. Once on The Strand, we ran past the Adelphi Theatre and The Savoy. The route was very flat, with only a very slight incline just after the 1km mark.

Since the race was named the Winter Run, there was lots of winter-themed encouragement along the way.  When we neared the 2km mark, we could hear the unmistakable beat of The Baha Men’s ‘Who Let The Dogs Out’ on repeat.  As we ran past the 2km sign we were greeted by a pack of huskies ready to give us a high five and cheer us on. Following their encouragement, we continued through the City, past the London Stock Exchange and towards Cheapside.  At the Guildhall Yard, just before the halfway mark, we found the drinks station which had a Swiss chalet theme. We then ran around the Bank of England. We then came across the penguin party, where a group of penguins were dancing along to Beyonce’s ‘Crazy In Love’ and encouraging runners on with high-fives.

We were soon running towards St Paul’s Cathedral, for me this was the most impressive of the sights on the route. There was a small gospel choir outside the cathedral singing ‘Oh Happy Day’ and applauding racers as we ran by.  We soon found ourselves running back down The Strand and back past the high-fiving huskies. The end of the race saw us running down Whitehall, finishing just before Downing Street. Here we crossed the line holding hands in celebration before collecting our medals and taking a few selfies with some polar bears.

After taking a few minutes to rest and take some celebratory photos (including some WFC jumping shots), we headed back towards Trafalgar Square to pick up our bags.  Queues were short and fast-moving at the bag drop, which was surprising given the number of people taking part. There was still a great atmosphere in Trafalgar Square as there was an after party going on featuring Take That and ABBA tribute acts.  They were also selling a selection of t-shirts, hoodies and other merchandise. The hoodies seemed to be selling particularly well given the freezing temperatures.

Since the race took part in central London and roads had been closed for it, there were lots of crowds and we were cheered along the entire route. This really helped to keep us going.  The route was very flat and fast, although the vast number of runners did mean that we sometimes had to slow a little. The event was very well organised with plenty of marshalls along the entire route. It was a great race for my first 10k and I can’t believe that we managed to do it in 53:01, when our aim had been to finish in under an hour.  I really enjoyed this race and would love to do it again.

WFC Runners - Winter Run, wintery parkrun, challenge update, Romsey 5 write-up

News

This week's main event was the Winter Run in London.  A 10km through the streets of the capital.  Starting at Trafalgar Square and finishing at Whitehall near Downing Street the route is a fast and flat 10km.  We had Jenny, Sarah and Simon H all running. Results were as follows:

Sarah H - 53:01
Jenny L - 53:01
Simon H - 56:13

Look out next week for Jenny's race report!

With over 40% of the parkruns across the country called off we were extremely lucky that Winchester was still able to go ahead.  The snow was laying fairly heavily and the main paths were sheets of ice, so care was needed as we ran.  We were advised to try and run on the grass as much as possible and to take care at each corner.  This said, the majority of the course was in good condition and was good to run on.

We had 15 Fit Clubbers on the day, including Lynn volunteering and Mike and Jo pacing.  There weren't any PBs but the standout performances were most definitely from Mike and Jo who both hit their pace targets (25 and 35 respectively) spot on.  Fantastic running!!

Over at Eastleigh they were also on, and Sarah L was able to record a course PB!  Superb effort given the conditions! Here is a link to the consolidated report:

Thursday 31st January - Session cancelled!

With snow and ice predicted this week's session was cancelled to ensure the safety of you runners!

Next week's session will be meeting at Dean Lane park at 7pm.

New Year Running Challenge

And so we find ourselves at the end of the first block of the challenge.  35 runners remain in the challenge and we have logged 495 runs collectively.  29 runners are still on 100% however 9 have used their with another 3 already signalling intention to do so in the next 4 weeks.  With challenges gone and winter yet to fully bite I am suspecting we will start to see the leaderboard start to fragment.

Weeks 5-8 are all about planning out your long runs.  These will form part of your plans for your target race in March and beyond.  Here is the table so far:

Best of luck for week 5!  Please keep the stories and updates coming!

Race Write-ups

Romsey 5 by Elsie Gilbert

I woke up at 06.30 looked out the window and it was windy, wet and cold, all I wanted to do was get back into my nice warm bed. We arrived into Romsey about 08.20 to find no parking apart from Aldi where only one machine was working and I ended up queuing for 35mins. Myself & Pete made our way to the start, we missed the race briefing due to the parking ticket queue and couldn’t find any fellow fit clubbers.

We decided to position ourselves in the 40-45 min finish time. I was aiming for sub 45 as we had done a 5 mile training run one lunchtime and did it in under 50mins, however as you all know Winchester is hilly so I was quite confident I could achieve under 45. Myself and Pete do like a bit of healthy competition but I told him I wasn’t really feeling it so he would probably beat me. The race started at 09.00 and as we left the start line the sun was shining brightly and I couldn’t really see, the start was really busy and I was already panicking about doing it in under 45min and decided to sneak away from Pete to get a good lead.

As I started to warm up I started to relax and really enjoy the run. I was happily running when Pete arrived alongside me saying “how on earth did you sneak off" to which I replied “more to the point how on earth did you catch up see ya" I then sped up to ensure a good lead. It was a flat course and made up of 3 laps however on the 3rdlap we had to turn right up a tarmac path which seemed to go on for ages, however as you had to run up and turn and come back down it was a good opportunity to look out for fellow fit clubbers and to see how far Pete was behind me. It was really good doing laps as every time you passed the start the crowd were cheering everyone on and it was very motivating and a good atmosphere.

The hardest part of the course was at the end of each lap as it was very uneven under foot. As I approached the finish I dug deep as James always says finish strong and the support from the crowd really helped. I passed the finish and collected the weighty medal and a bottle of water and went over to meet my friend who had come to support us, I was really happy when he said the time was 09.43 which meant I had achieved sub 45.

We waited for Pete who wanted sub 50 which he also achieved. As we were leaving we bumped into Glenna and managed a few photos. I really enjoyed this race the course was lovely and although it was cold it turned out really nice. I would definitely recommend it. I wish I had looked at the course beforehand and read my race pack as missed out on sweets at the end!!
